Background
The customer specializes in the design and manufacture of AGV and AMR equipment, providing mobile robot solutions for customers in various industries to ensure their productivity and production efficiency.
Previously, they had been using high-performance x86-based AGV/AMR controllers. However, such controllers proved less cost-efficient for simpler applications where basic AMR/AGV controllers with minimal functions were enough to meet usage requirements. Therefore, an ARM architecture alternative solution was designed to reduce the system cost for the customer.

Solution
To support the development of cost-effective AGVs and AMRs, Vantron provided the VT-AGV-3588J controller, an ARM-based platform designed to combine high computational performance with rich I/O and connectivity options. Running Ubuntu 22.04 and offering flexible Codesys Runtime integration, the controller enables customers to rapidly develop and customize AGV control functions for a variety of operational scenarios.
The VT-AGV-3588J fully supports ROS2, allowing seamless integration with the customer’s software environment for autonomous navigation and task planning. An embedded STM32 MCU delivers fast, reliable system control, while multiple communication interfaces—including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Ethernet—ensure smooth connection with safety I/O modules and other peripheral devices. The platform’s support for AI/AO/DI/DO, coupled with a 6 TOPS NPU, provides the necessary capabilities for industrial automation and intelligent motion control.
Designed for real-world deployment, the AGV/AMR controller features a wide 9–36 V input range, IP65-rated protection, and low-latency, low-jitter motion control, ensuring robust performance in demanding mobile robotics environments. Its compact, fanless design reduces system complexity and contributes to overall cost savings, particularly in applications where high-performance x86 controllers were previously over-specified.

Benefits
The integration of ROS 2 Humble and safety I/O modules ensured compliance with functional safety requirements while maintaining strong performance. The VT-AGV-3588J helped the customer lower system costs compared to their previous x86-based solution. The customer successfully developed a new line of low-cost AGVs/AMRs, expanding their market coverage.
