Industrial Edge Gateway for Commercial and Industrial Energy Storage Systems
This case describes how an energy technology and renewable-energy system integrator used the EG604 industrial edge gateway to connect data acquisition, protocol conversion, local application deployment, and cloud communication within a commercial and industrial energy storage system. With three CAN interfaces, multiple serial ports, four Gigabit Ethernet ports, and industrial-grade protection, the gateway addresses multi-device integration, concurrent data traffic, and local control to ensure stable operation in electrically noisy environments. The solution has been deployed across commercial and industrial parks, integrated solar-storage-charging sites, and microgrid projects.

Background
As distributed energy storage and integrated commercial storage cabinets became more widely deployed, the customer, a renewable energy system integrator, encountered three recurring challenges in cabinet integration and field operations.
1. Heterogeneous devices and protocols. Each cabinet integrated a battery management system (BMS), power conversion system (PCS), smart meter, and environmental monitoring equipment. These devices used a mix of Modbus RTU/TCP, CANopen, IEC 60870-5-104, and other protocols. Gateways with limited interfaces or throughput became a bottleneck, increasing the risk of packet loss under concurrent traffic.
2. Delayed local control caused by cloud dependence. During grid fluctuations or peak and off-peak dispatch, relying entirely on cloud-issued commands could delay the local response. The customer needed to deploy selected energy management system (EMS) strategies at the edge so that data processing and control logic could continue locally without depending on real-time cloud communication.
3. Electromagnetic interference and inaccurate system time. High-power conversion equipment created substantial electromagnetic interference. Following an unexpected power outage and restart, clock drift could disrupt event-log timestamps, making battery safety traceability, fault analysis, and service-life assessment less reliable.

Solution
Vantron provided the EG604 multi-I/O industrial gateway as the edge control and connectivity node inside the storage cabinet. Its hardware interfaces, ARM-based processing platform, and industrial design were aligned with the customer's integration and operating requirements.
1. High-density industrial bus connectivity. Three CAN interfaces support stable, high-speed acquisition from multiple battery cluster control units (BCUs). Four RS485 ports and two configurable RS232/RS485 ports connect the PCS, smart meter, environmental monitoring system, and other field devices for concurrent communication.
2. ARM-based processing and local EMS support. The gateway uses an industrial quad-core ARM processor with 4 GB DDR4 memory and 64 GB eMMC storage. Debian 11 with a Docker runtime allows the customer to deploy edge applications and EMS strategies for on-site data processing and control execution.
3. Four Gigabit Ethernet ports and flexible network expansion. Four Gigabit Ethernet ports, including two PCIe 3.0 x1 connections and two RGMII connections, support separation between field-device data acquisition and cloud-facing communications. A Mini PCIe slot can accommodate optional 4G LTE or Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules for different deployment environments.
4. Hardware RTC backup and industrial protection. A hardware real-time clock with battery backup keeps system time accurate after a power interruption and preserves consistent timestamps in event logs. The gateway operates from -20°C to 70°C and provides EMC Level 4 protection for use near high-power conversion equipment.

Benefits
With the EG604, the customer standardized the edge gateway architecture across distributed energy storage projects. Integrated interfaces reduced wiring and BOM complexity, while local EMS processing improved control response. EMC Level 4 protection and RTC backup ensured reliable records, and BlueSphere enabled centralized monitoring, updates, and maintenance with fewer site visits.
